Reading 1

This reading definitely got me thinking about the hidden messages in this popular series. Although I haven’t read any of the books, I have seen every movie and a lot of the interpretations in the article seemed like a bit of a stretch. Devout Christian leaders seemed to be over interpreting the dialogue in the series. The excerpt of Hermione giving Harry a motivational speech on how you are who you are, no matter what kind of magic you’re capable of sounds like a generic message. All movies contain motivational messages that encourage one to believe in them and not let outside influences effect the person they aspire to be.
This series was unnecessarily ridiculed for the simple imagination of a young writer. JK Rowling started this series when she was a young adult and continued writing. It was a very unexpected miracle that the series took of as it did. I do not believe that she began writing this series with hidden intentions to erupt a religious war and media frenzy over a children’s novel. The fact that authors wrote entire novels debating every word that came out of Ronal Weesley’s mouth seems ludicrous if you consider the audience and origination of the story.

  1. Avery, I love what you had to say about this reading. Devout religious leaders took what J.K. Rowling wrote all out of context. The books are written to grab attention, not to be used as the bible. I also do not believe that she intentionally wrote this series in a religious way. Any book can be taken out of context like hers but her series got more attention. She was just trying to capture the attention of young people, not higher ups on the religious hierarchy. These books gained a lot of attention in that field that was completely unnecessary. Harry Potter is not Jesus.

  2. I also loved what you had to say. I couldn't agree more that the books are being over analyzed and that many of the motivational actions and quotes are more generic than they are religious. It is true that certain books are written with another message, but I don't think the Harry Potter series fit into that classification. I would agree that the books were unnecessarily ridiculed and I think that every story should stop being analyzed for unintentional religious connotations. I really liked how you brought up the Hermione speech from the reading and gave your own interpretation in order to support your claim.
